The Regional Research & Technology Transfer Sub Station, Kirei, Sundargarh comes under the North Western Plateau Agro climatic Zone of Orissa. It is established in 1991. It comprises two districts namely Sundargarh & Deogarh. This is the land of hills and forest, rivers and fountains, minerals, Biodiversity and is famous for ancient tribal culture. It lies in the geographical parallels within the latitude of 200 35’ to 22032’ North and longitude of 83032’ to 85022’East. The Geographical area of the zone is 12.90 lakh hectares which accounts for 8.45% of the state. Of the 12.90 lakh ha of geographical area, 4.57 lakh hectares is under cultivation with a gross cropped area of 5.81 lakh ha. The North Western Plateau Zone consisting Sundargarh & Deogarh is divided into five Agro-ecological/farming situations. Red & Yellow soils are most predominant in the zone.

Physiographically, the North Western Plateau Zone is distinguished with extensive & fairly scattered tree clade, mountain peaks, vast inaccessible forests & exclensive valleys. It is an undulating table land of varying elevations broken by rugged hills and hill ranges, streams and rivers like IB & Brahmani. The plateau is at 300m hight from MSL with undulating and rolling topography or uplands medium terrace lands and bottom lands.

Five types of soils viz:(i)red soils(alfisols),(ii)laterite and lateritic soils (ultisois and oxisols).(iii)mixed red and yellow soils (ultisols),(iv)mixed red and black soils(Association of ultisols and vertisols) brown forest soils (Humlets) are prevalent in this zone.

Rice is the principal crop of the zone occupying 67.12% of the net sown area. The important groups of crops such as cereals,pulses,vegetables, oilseeds,millets sugarcane etc. account for 76.5, 22.5, 12.99, 14.3, 1.42 and 0.15% respectively of the net cultivated area in the zone.
