Forest Resource Management

Department of Forest Resource Management (FRM) started in the year 2010 with an aim to offer the courses of B.Sc. Forestry Program as per ICAR syllabus and to provide Post Graduate program in M. Sc. Forestry (Forest Resource Management). Forest resource management refers to sustainable utilization of forest resources including land, water, soil, plant and animal resources keeping the quantity and quality at present use and conservation for future generation. Odisha is endowed with immense rich flora and fauna resource flourishing in diverse geo-morphological and climatic conditions. During past few decades extreme metrological events are very frequent and endangering economic and ecological stability of many ecosystems. Environmental pollution and climate change adding fuel to this process. Assessment of net ecosystem productivity and carbon foot print in a changing climate will support policy makers and stake holders for sustainable utilization of natural resources. As an academic institution the department will look forward towards education, research and human resource development in this regard with the following mandates and area of work.

Mandate:

  • Development of technologies and skilled manpower in the area of Forest Resource Management
  • Forest Assessment of biodiversity, Net Ecosystem Production and Carbon foot print of different ecosystems.
  • Protection of Forest resources
  • Waste Management

Area of work

i. Ecosystem functioning :

  • Assessment of biodiversity in natural ecosystems and Urban settings
  • Assessment of Net Ecosystem Production and Carbon foot print of different ecosystems

ii. Pollution Control:

  • Eco-friendly utilization of solid waste like fly ash, red mud etc.
  • Assessment of Air pollution tolerance index of different trees

iii. Protection of forest Resources

  • Assessment of major pest of economically important timber species and their control measure
  • Assessment of impact of forest fire
